Bulgaria's rose valley is a vision of pink. The Damascena rose buds have burst into colour - and are ready for picking. Workers are turning out here early in the morning to harvest the flowers, to make rose oil - fondly known as "liquid gold" because of its density and honey notes. It's a blooming industry - providing seasonal jobs for some 40-thousand people. The Damascena is considered to be the best oil-bearing rose. The petals are picked still laden with dew - and then transported to a distillery as soon as possible, to keep them in the best shape. "I work in construction, but every year I do not want to miss the rose picking. I am helping my family. I am satisfied with the work because it provides good income," says rose picker Anton Naskov. "Well, so far we are well, in the ...

"Well, so far we are well, in the future we will see." Unique climate and soil conditions make the Rose Valley one of the world's biggest production areas for rose oil. Low temperatures in the morning of 5 to 10 degrees Celsius (41 to 50 degrees Fahrenheit) and highs of 25 to 30 degrees Celsius (77 to 86 Fahrenheit) at midday are said to help the roses generate more oil. The air humidity, cloudiness and precipitation in May and June are said to help too. The quantity of flowers picked in a day is closely matched with how much can be processed, here at the Enyo Bonchev rose oil distillery. The sacks of petals are emptied into huge vats as part of the production process. "The initial production of rose oil is a simple distillation. For this purpose, rose oil distillers have been used, these copper kettles and wooden coolers. The first distillate is being boiled again to give a purer product," explains Genka Zhekova, a technologist at the distillery. It takes some 4,000 kilograms (8,800 pounds) of rose petals to produce one kilogram (2.2 pounds) of 100 percent pure, steam distilled rose oil. The oil, which is used in perfumes, costs up to seven-thousand euros (9,551 US dollars) per kilogram. Bulgaria is one of the world's leading exporters of rose oil, producing 70 percent of the world's output. Filip Lesicharov, Chief Executive Officer and Owner of the Enyo Bonchev distillery, says traceability is "one of the most important things" for customers. Demand for organically produced, fairtrade oil is growing says Bonchev. "They are coming more and more comparing in the past years in order to check our production, how we are working, whether we are using fair trade practices," he explains. "Not only caring about the quality of the product which they are receiving but also how we are producing this rose oil. Every year we have different visits from customers and I see more of them coming to Bulgaria." The biggest buyers of Bulgarian rose oil are France, the UK, Germany, Switzerland, Spain, the United States and Japan. There also emerging markets in China, Thailand, and Korea. This year's harvest season started on 10 May and ends on 15 June. The Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan oil pipeline was the single greatest geopolitical victory for the West in the wake of the Cold War. The outcome is redefining a region. Amanda Rivkin hopes to return to the route to continue documenting the transformation. Amanda Rivkin is seeking funding for her photography project through Emphas.is. In order to receive contributions, the project must be funded in full by December 11, 2011. To help: http://www.emphas.is/web/guest/discoverprojects?projectID=342 From Amanda: I first became interested in the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan (BTC) oil pipeline in the mid-1990s, when the Clinton White House Special Envoy Bill Richardson and Azerbaijani government were pushing oil companies to build the massive multinational infrastructure project. In the tumultuous post-Cold War period and with the demise of the Soviet Union, major oil companies preferred a more direct and less expensive route through Iran, but American interests prevailed. Oil from the BTC pipeline first reached the port of Ceyhan in southeast Turkey in May of 2006, an event hailed as the greatest geopolitical victory for the West in the aftermath of the Cold War. Since 9/11, however, the same interests that enthusiastically backed the project initially have now shifted their attention elsewhere — towards the Middle East and South Asia. In the summer of 2010, with the assistance of a Young Explorers Grant from the National Geographic Society, I followed and photographed the pipeline's 1,100-mile route, which skirts five conflict zones in three countries representing believers of both Islam and Christianity. That trip was a profound study in contrasts. The money brought in by the oil revenues converted Baku, the Azerbaijani capital, into a wealthy boom town, with elegant cafés, designer shops, and the Caspian seaside promenade, Bulvar. The low-rise old neighborhoods in the center, including large sections of the Besh Mertebe neighborhood where I now live, were being destroyed to build modern high rises. In one village in Georgia, the locals had been given compensation money for the pipeline's disruption to their agricultural lands, and many had purchased cars. As we drove through, they were literally laying down new pavement. Photographing and living in the region, I have seen how development can go right and wrong. With such a fragile cohesion in this geopolitical powder keg, it is critical for me to return this winter and visually catalogue the slow evolution of the region around the pipeline. As a backer of this project, you will become a participant in an overlooked but crucial angle of history and help others to develop an understanding of the complicated Eurasian puzzle. Depending on your particular level of support, you will also be privy to a signed postcard, soft or hardbound book, or a limited edition print from this series. All backers will receive exclusive access to the "making of" zone, which includes regular updates from the field, the region, travel tips, visual notes and insights to the evolution of this project. Bio: Polaris Images: Amanda Rivkin is a photojournalist based in Azerbaijan. She is the recipient of a Fulbright Scholarship and Young Explorers Grant from the National Geographic Society. Her work has been included in The Year in Pictures in The New York Times and Newsweek.

The carpet of organic lavender stretches 100 hectares (250 acres) at the Enio Bonchev Production Company located close to the central town of Kazanlak, at the foot of the Balkan mountains in Bulgaria. It's noon, and dozens of workers are picking lavender blossoms in the blistering heat on the purple coloured fields. At temperatures close to the 100-degrees-Fahrenheit mark (37.8 Celsius) the blossoms' concentration of oil is at its highest. Skilled workers can pick up to 300 kilograms (660 lbs.) of blossoms per day. Despite the beautiful setting, work in the fields in tough, as seasonal worker, Nina Pashova explains. "Each summer I work here on the field along with my father. I cannot find any other job. I'm unemployed for the rest of the year. Summer time we work, winter time we don't. There's no other way here for us." Within 24 hours, bags packed with lavender petals are taken to the nearby distillery where workers press them by foot before the precious oil is extracted in a steam distillation process. Bulgarian farmers have expanded their output of lavender oil leaving France lagging behind. France is the traditional leader in the production of this important cosmetics ingredient. Bulgaria has doubled its production of lavender essential oil from 60 metric tonnes in 2011 to an expected 120 metric tonnes this year, according to one of the country's top producers. Looking into Bulgaria's expansion into the lavender business, Nikolay Ninov, an expert at the state-run laboratory for essential oils, says production has shrunk in countries like Hungary, Moldova and Ukraine - especially on the Crimea peninsula. He says Bulgaria, the EU's poorest country with its high unemployment rate, scores of skilled farmers, a favourable climate and unspoiled fields, provides a promising blend for essential oil producers. "Producers like Hungary, the former Yugoslav republics, Moldova and Ukraine with its former Crimea peninsula - the heart of the lavender oil production and China have ceased production over the past 30 years leaving it all to Bulgaria." According to the Enio Bonchev Production Company owner, Filip Lissicharov Bulgarian producers are exporting two-thirds of their output annually to French producers of lavender oil as French companies strive to keep their market position. He cites reports by CRIEPPAM, a French fragrant plants research organisation, according to which a plague of cicada insects in southern France linked to global warming has seriously damaged crops in the Provence lavender fields. Lissicharov says Bulgaria has taken advantage of this and expects this year's prices to stay at previous levels of around 60-70 euro (USD $82 - $95) per ton. Lissicharov warns that lavender oil prices have to be kept at reasonable levels as it is used mainly as an ingredient in mass cosmetics which could be skipped by producers if prices soar. Other large buyers of Bulgarian lavender oil besides France are Germany, the United States and Japan.
